Election Results in Jamaica

It is alleged that Omar Davis (the previous Finance Minister) once said "Jus run wid it", when he was asked about the Finsac debacle while he was Minister of Finance. I now echo his words in response to the recent Jamaica Elections held on December 29th, 2011.
Stats from the ECJ indicate that approximately 52.10% of eligible voters exercised their right to vote, so what happened to the other 48%?
I will refrain from getting into the analysis of the election, as Jamaica is known for a lot of talking, analyzing and nitpicking, but nobody has the definitive answers to the question of "what happened?. Prior to the election date, it was widely pronounced (using various polls, and learned pundits) that it would be a close election with the JLP winning by a nose. So to see that the PNP won by a wide margin, is a surprise indeed.
To the people of Jamaica, be careful what you wish for, now you have to "run wid it".
To the JLP, now in opposition, take solace that you will live to fight another day, in 2016. To the PNP, now forming the next Government, I hope you have a vision for Jamaica and be prepared for significant pain in this period of a weakening World economy. Be aware that Jamaica in now a welfare state, and you can't keep borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, it is not sustainable.
This is my last post for the year, so to all who venture to read my ramblings. I wish you HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!

Only In Jamaica!!!

This came across my desk, and I thought I should share.

An American decided to write a book about famous churches around the World. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to China .

On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '$10,000 per call'.

The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for.

The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for
$10,000 you could talk to God.
The American thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Japan . There, at a very large cathedral, he saw
the same golden telephone with the same sign under it.

He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in China and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was.

She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for
$10,000 he could talk to God. 'O.K., thank you,' said the American.

He then traveled to Pakistan , Srilanka , Russia , Germany and France . In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '$10,000 per call' sign under it.

The American, upon leaving Vermont decided to travel
to Jamaica to see if Jamaicans had the same phone.

He arrived in Jamaica , and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read: 'One cent per call.'

The American was surprised, so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've traveled all over world and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in the US the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?'

The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Jamaica now, Son.
IT’S A LOCAL CALL '.

This is the only heaven on Earth.

The Company We Keep

This appeared in the Trinidad Guardian a few days ago. You can interpret the meaning of AJ being overweight.
The Air Jamaica History can be seen here

In 2008 this article appeared in the Gleaner Air Jamaica Bankrupt

In 2007 the newly elected Government, made it clear that it intended to divest Air Jamaica. Why would anyone try to sell an entity such as a national carrier? The simple answer is overweight. No Government could continue to subsidize an entity to the tune of $30 to $50 million per year. The is just plain wrong and insidious.

Fast forward to 2010 and the government has to go begging to the IMF. The IMF has placed certain condition(s) (usual and expected), one of which is the divestment of Air Jamaica. The deal to sell AJ to the Trinidad owned airline is almost complete (minus the enormous debt load) and now people are coming out of the woodwork wanting to stop the sale.

Please take the time to read here and
here and finally
this

-Where were they in 2007-2009?
-If the sale of AJ is not completed, the IMF will not provide the loan, so what are these people with their brilliant ideas going to do about that?
- Is the Jamaican Government supposed to consult the diaspora every time the elected representatives make a decision? These people have the gall to say that they were not consulted?
-The divestment of AJ has been going on since 2008, now they also say that they are not aware of the haste in selling AJ?
I have always maintained that the Jamaican Diaspora is looking at Jamaica through rose colored glasses and they should wake up. They cannot and will not succeed by trying to institute solutions based on North American standards, which (in most cases) are opposite to the Jamaican culture. Jamaicans do not want the diaspora to dictate to them what must be done to solve their problems.

Here is a quotation from the Observer
"The diaspora has good people who decided to live, work and contribute abroad - not in their birth land. We rejoice that they "made it" but they must not burden us with duty waivers, conferences or be self-serving dictators in our lives."
You can read the article in its entirety here

Give me a break.

Air Jamaica

This came across my desk today, and I thought it was rather funny, so I now share it with whoever reads this blog. Try to see the humour in it and smile ..... some of them do happen on the way to and from Jamrock.

You know you are on a flight to Jamaica When ...
-You get to the airport before the Air Jamaica counter staff
-Everybody is checking in suitcases the size of a refrigerator
-The person beside you taps you on your shoulder and says "Yuh only have one piece? Beg yu check een dis ya piece ah luggage fah mi nuh.!"
- Everybody makes a bolt for the gate when the announcer on the p.a. system starts to say "this is NOT a boarding announcement."
- you can't get on board because somebody in front of you is trying to get a motor vehicle engine block into the overhead compartment
- At least one passenger is accompanied by an armed Federal Agent
- You can only get the Observer to read, no Gleaner roun' here
- People are trying to figure out what "Port of Embarkation" means
- the passenger next to you slowly leans away from you while raising one leg and mutters "Yes bwoy, DAT is gas!"
- Somebody hands a flight attendant a paper bag and asks her to "heat up dis ya patty fi mi nuh baby"
- The plane starts to descend, and a woman in the seat behind you says to her friend ... "Come Darris, time fi go tile it an' tidy!"
- The overhead compartment smells like fish, jerk chicken and rum ... then something from up there starts to drip on you.
- Most of the passengers clap when the plane lands
- While the plane is still moving and taxiing to the terminal, people are unbuckling their seat belts, grabbing their hand luggage and heading towards the plane door
- Everybody who have a big screen TV, a boom-box and a microwave go straight to the "Nothing to Declare" line in Customs.

-People are real, wig, weave, gold teeth, false nails...real. They have a love for JA caan dun and will chat to you like dem did know you forevva...got to love dem JA flights
